Atlanta PHP

The Southeast’s premier PHP community.

May 2007 Meeting

When: Thursday, May 3, 2007—7pm-9pm
Where: Consulate General of Canada

Presentation: Give Your Site a Boost With memcached

Ben Ramsey will follow-up our recent discussions on scalability with a practical, hands-on approach to implementing the memcache daemon and using PHP to interface with it. He will provide plenty of ready-to-use code samples.

Today’s high-traffic websites implement caching techniques that cut down data processing to increase speed of content delivery. Memcached provides one of the fastest and easiest-to-use caching servers. This talk will cover memcached and the PECL memcache extension from setting up a memcached server to using it to provide a variety of caching solutions for data and sessions.

Mini-Series: PHP IDEs

We will showcase the features of another IDE for developing PHP applications. TBD.

Lightning Talks

We’ll round out the meeting with a couple of lightning talks from anyone who’d like to share. Either be prepared with a 3-5 minute presentation, or simply stand up and talk for a few minutes about anything you wish related to PHP or related technologies.

Location

Our meeting takes place at the Consulate General of Canada at 100 Colony Square in Midtown Atlanta (at the corner of Peachtree and 14th Streets). Click here for directions. You will need to see the concierge in order to gain access to the 17th floor.

April 2007 Meeting

ATTENTION: MEETING LOCATION CHANGED!!!

When: Thursday, April 5, 2007—7pm-9pm
Where: Schematic

Presentation: Designing for Scalability

This month, Brian DeShong is visiting Atlanta and will continue our scalability discussions with his “Designing for Scalability” presentation. Here’s Brian’s description of the presentation:

I’ll focus on what I believe to be the three cornerstones for scaling an application: caching, denormalization of data, and queues/batch jobs. I’ll be presenting some basic examples of each in order to illustrate why these are good practices, and how they lead to a site that both performs and scales well. Designing an application from the start so that it both performs and scales well is a great practice, of course.

Mini-Series: PHP IDEs

Kevin Roberts will also kick off a new mini-series reviewing various PHP IDEs with his demo of MPSoftware’s PHP Designer.
